Never too old for Vacation Bible School
“Been there, done that.”
That’s how I responded to Heidi when she asked me to help with Vacation Bible School this summer. After all, I’m a grandmother now. I’m retired. Why can’t some of those younger people do it?
But our children’s director can be very persuasive (and persistent), so I agreed to help out. And am I ever glad I did.
I was assigned to escort a group of seven-year-olds to their various activities. Those kids couldn’t have been any sweeter. Their enthusiasm was definitely contagious as they learned the songs, played the games, marveled over science, enjoyed a snack, and listened to a Bible story. I was dragging by the end of the evening (I think it was that jumping song that did me in), but it all came into perspective when one little girl talked to me about one of the Bible stories she remembered from the previous year’s VBS. She had been looking forward to this year’s VBS ever since. What an amazing testament to the teachers and helpers—and to the marvelous way that God works in our lives—that VBS had made such an impression on her.
So thanks, Heidi, for twisting my arm. VBS was as much of a blessing to me as it was to the children—and maybe more. Now to rest up for next year.
