What a lovely day to be a GEM! It was senior citizens discount day at Blue Licks Battlefield State Park, and everyone knows how much God’s Energetic Methodist Seniors love a bargain—and a buffet. So we filled the church bus, and several cars followed it to the restaurant for lunch.
The food was delicious, but the conversation was even better, punctuated with laughter all around. Over chocolate pie and banana pudding, our table started to reminisce about church leaders who have gone on to their eternal reward. Alan Williams told us about Herb Campbell asking him to take over as head usher when he retired from the position. Alan was hesitant at first, but his mother-in-law, Evelyn Lucky, suggested that he try it for a year. That was 31 years ago, and Alan is still serving faithfully as head usher today.
We talked about Jack Lucky, Dee Harney, and Albert Clough serving as Sunday school superintendent, and Johnny Hines being treasurer. Dennis Snapp was board chair for many years, and his wife, Ruth, was church secretary. Doris Williams remembers that Mrs. Snapp’s reports on church activities in the newsletter and bulletin always ended with “a good time was had by all.”
That pretty much summed up our day, too. It was fun to recall all of these godly people and our rich heritage of faith that we should all cherish.
After gathering for a picture, we left with the sun warming our backs, our stomachs full, and smiles on our faces—anxious for our next get together. I hope you’ll join us. Everyone is welcome.
