Our grandson, Andrew, was confirmed yesterday at St. Luke UMC in Lexington, so we attended worship service there. I thought Pastor Mark Girard’s message was right on the mark for Andrew and the eight other confirmands who were welcomed into membership—as well as all of us in the congregation.
He reviewed the covenants that we all made when we joined the church: to support it with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. Then, he encouraged us to go the second mile by doing more than is expected of us in each of these areas.
Instead of thinking how little you can get by with, we were challenged to think about how much we can do. So many opportunities are available to us that we are missing a blessing if we don’t take advantage of at least some of them.
So this week, I’m thinking about what I can do to be of greater service to my church and beyond, and then I’ll try to follow through and go that extra mile. I hope you’ll join me in the Second Mile Society.
