Parts of the Soul

A soul can be hard to define

It is made up of three parts,

A will, a mind, and a body

All affected by people’s hearts.

God-connected, in harmony with others,

Is what God intended for us all,

Selfishness got us way out of line

Was the cause behind mankind’s Fall.

Living at odds with God’s way

Our soul just may become lost,

If the three parts don’t work in unity

Our soul could incur great cost.

None are created to be self-sufficient

We need God and loving friends,

Wrapping our arms around others

Broken and bleeding hearts it mends.

If someone asked you what your “soul” is, could you tell them? It’s complicated, but I guess you could say that it’s similar to a program that runs a computer. It is the operating system of your life that connects all the other parts into a single (whole life). We have a will (free choice), a mind (thoughts and feelings), and a body (fleshy appetites). All parts need to work together in harmony. The soul is the deepest part of you – (whole person). The soul connects all these other parts into a single you. We can have a healthy soul when all three entities are connected to God and in harmony with other people. That’s God’s intent for his creation. Dallas Willard said that you’re a soul made by God, made for God, and made to need God, which means you were not made to be self-sufficient. To focus on my soul means to look at my life under the care and connection of God. To focus on myself apart from God means losing awareness of what matters most. The more we obsess about ourselves, the more we neglect our soul. If we are living at odds with the way God made life in the universe to run, we will not have a healthy soul.

We all have an outer life, which is seen, and an inner life, which is unseen. Of course, I’m speaking of what we humans can see or not see. As for God, he can see inside and outside of us all. Nothing is hidden from Him. Our inner life is where our secret thoughts and hopes and wishes live. I guess we all are glad at times that others cannot know what we are thinking, especially when it’s not good toward someone else. Aristotle once said that a friend is one soul in two bodies – meaning they both are connected.

The salvation of your soul is not just about where you go when you die. Salvation means healing or deliverance at the deepest level of who we are in the care of God through the presence of Jesus. Often in life our souls become hardened when we’ve been hurt or disappointed. They become bitter and our wills become hostile. Anger has upset the harmony God intends for our souls. We can then become estranged from someone and also from God. If we refuse to forgive someone our unity can be lost.

The most important thing about you is not the things that you achieve; it is the person that you become. It’s difficult in this sinful world in which we live to keep our will, mind, and body working at harmony with God and all others all the time. We definitely need God’s help to guide us in the right direction as we work toward becoming a healthy soul.
