Work to Honor God

May 14, 2019

Work is something that we all do

We should do it with a whole heart,

It’s best to have a good attitude

Toward the work before we start.

We need to be trained how to work

Someone showing us how it is done,

Some work we’ll like, some we won’t

Enjoyable work we’ll view as fun.

Honor God in every kind of work

So he’ll smile and say, “well done”,

A pat on the back is encouraging

Our feet pick up from a walk to a run.

Our character is developed in work

For humility should win over pride,

Never think you are too good for a job

Listen, respond, to a righteous guide.

When we enjoy our work, we will strive to do the best we possibly can do.  We’ll give it everything we’ve got.  If we are working at something we don’t enjoy, we tend to slack off giving it our best.  We want to hurry up and get it over with, so we often do a sloppy job that wouldn’t pass inspection.  According to scripture, you should do all work as if you’re working for God.  “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” (Colossians 3:23)  You’ll note that it says, all your heart, which means you should give your work (extra energy), regardless of what you’re doing.  Most of us never stop to think we are giving honor or not giving honor to God when we do our work.  We look upon work as something that needs to be done, but those jobs we don’t like doing, our attitude may be to procrastinate or even become lazy and look the other way from the work.  We sure don’t honor God that way.

I hope you are blessed with having a job you enjoy doing.  Enjoyable jobs we would do even if we didn’t get paid for them.  The pay is an added bonus.  I used to think I sure wouldn’t like being a garbage collector.  It’s a stinky job in hot weather, but someone has to do it.  If you think more positively, you could even enjoy that job better by thinking how much good you are doing for other people by getting rid of their waste each week.  Can you imagine how much trash would pile up if it wasn’t hauled away!  Having this attitude you can do your best at the work knowing you are honoring other people and God.

It seems to me that God wants us all to experience the good work and the bad work to see how we will respond to the work.  We work at home, at school, in church, our regular paying jobs, military service, and in many other areas.  Perhaps we haven’t been taught the scripture of Colossians 3:23 growing up, but as parents we can teach our children the right way to do a job.  If the child messes up a job, they should be made to do it over.  Train your children the right way to work.  Always be encouraging and praise them after doing the work the right way.  We should take pride in how we work so God, others, and even ourselves will be pleased with our efforts.
